    Great Gigs

Stones were beyond brilliant Otta. There is a reason why even at those prices every single ticket was sold. As far as rock bands go they're as good as it gets as far as I'm concerned. Didn't hurt that we were in the tiny mosh pit in front of the stage. A very sedate mosh pit; only about 200 of us in there and completely surrounded by a walk-way so the views were incredible and because I couldn't actually see over the top of the said walk-way it felt like they were playing a really intimate gig, even though it was the O2. Low point of the evening was indeed Florence strangling Gimme Shelter. Punching above her weight and couldn't hack it. Lisa Fisher (Goddess) was robbed! Dulwich got a shout-out though. When she walked off Mick said "there goes Florence from Dulwich, not far from where we started out". Highlight of the evening was Mick Taylor playing Midnight Rambler; didn't see that coming. Pure genius. Got to see Mick Taylor again soon. Definitely lived up to all the hype. Five star gig.
  2. If I'm walking down the road late at night and a guy is on the same side as me, either in front or behind, then I cross. I don't mind if his skin is black, white or sky blue with pink spots; I cross. If the guy crosses then I cross back. This just happens to be my personal safety protocol for keeping safe late at night. I don't talk on the phone or have headphones on; I'm just concentrating on who's around me and it's second nature I've been doing it so long. I don't mean to cause offence to anyone; I'm just doing what I feel I need to do.
  3. Sorry for your bad experience but if you parked outside my house and your car was vandalised would you feel I'd let you down? Horrible thing to happen but the people who you should be angry at are the low-lifes that damaged your car.
  4. Terrible think to happen to you and I'm not surprised you're angry Bond. Quite honestly (and I'm a 5'4 white woman) in that situation I'd have slapped her stupid. Today it was you and tomorrow it will be someone else. Take a deep calm breath and follow up with the police.
  5. What Jeremy said. Good on you for holding out.
  6. BusyB, my understanding is that the money will go to your father's estate. The downside of this is that it gets taxed twice.

Florence would do a screech, not a wail. Listened to some ropey iphone recordings on YouTube and Mary J sounded great. It would be a great shame if her voice is starting to go. She put Bono back in his box so she has scored many points with me. Not convinced about Florence but hope I'm wrong.

Love Adele. She would nail Gimmie Shelter. It's a song that separates the men from the boys (so to speak). I don't think Florence is up to it. I bet Mary J nailed it - would love to have seen that.
  9. Mr Ben - you used to live near me so you know only too well that by the corner of our road was a big fly-tipping spot and there was constant grafitti. Awful.

Now the gig thread is the travel log. Just to go back on topic, my friend has told me that Florence is singing Gimme Shelter tomorrow night. NOOOOO. She hasn't got the lungs for it (see what I did there). Somebody tell me I'm wrong.

Ha - I know exactly what you mean quids. In 1986/7 I spent a lot of time in New York. My partner worked all the hours on his business start up. I was lucky if we got to have dinner together and I spent most of the time on my own. We lived on the Upper East (oooh get me) but I spent a lot of time going walkabout all over the city taking photographs. I was warned over and over "not to stray from the path" but I went everywhere regardless. You could turn a corner and instantly know that it was the wrong place to be. I remember one day making a sort of pilgrimage to the Electric Ladyland Studios in the West Village and feeling a long way from my demographic. A couple of years ago I was walking out of a Starbucks (I know, I know) and bang, there it was, Electric Ladyland, surrounded by Sushi Bars such. It used to be one of those places which, in the words of The Boss, "Down in the part of town where when you hit a red light you don?t stop". I don't think those places exist in Manhattan any more. Different city.

    Great Gigs

I wish Jah! Reckon you'd be a brilliant person to go with. I hope this Thursday is as good as the reviews say Sunday was. Gimme Shelter was top of my list for Thursday but I'm not sure they'll do it because they had Mary J Blige to help out with that one and I don't think she'll do a repeat. The thing that's annoyed me most in the run up to these gigs (even more annoying than the ticket prices) has been the anti-ageism that always accompanies any Stones activity (and has done for decades). Anti-ageism is the final frontier. These days you can't have an overt pop at someone for being black, or female or disabled; but you can still stick the welly in because someone's old. People need to wise up to the fact that every one of us is going that way. This is their 50th year and, yes, they should be giving fans a break on ticket prices. But they've never looked after their fans so I guess it's expecting too much for them to start now. I think the ticket prices are embarrassing but I also think the comments people make about them being too old/too wrinkly are embarrassing.

The tickets are so expensive because they're greedy bastards. Also, Richard Branson is paying them a huge amount of money for these gigs so he's raking in the money on ticket prices. I'm going on Thursday. I wouldn't cross the street to say hello to any of them but I'm dizzy with excitement about the prospect of seeing Thursday's gig. Can't stop playing 40 licks.
  15. This is the forum at its worst; using it to have a pop at a local business during a recession. The correct thing to have done would have been to raise the issue privately with the shop at the time or shortly afterwards. Maybe you were correct in your summary but this isn't appropriate. The shop owners may not be online (not everyone from ED is on here) and here you are writing something potentially damaging to their future that they can't respond to because they won't remember it now. Regarding your comparison of service in a pub; people very often get completely missed out at a bar because for one reason or another they aren't seen. Happens to me all of the time. Then you get "oh sorry, didn't see you there, what would you like?". "Who cares" you say. That speaks volumes about you. A lot of us care about the health of our high street.
  16. Love Joannas. Best roast tatties in South London.
  17. Mulberry is having it's annual pre-Christmas super sale in South Molton Street next Monday to Weds. Strictly invitation only. The numbers are limited and once they get enough RSVPs they close the books. Previous years have yielded massive discounts on non-current stock and about 30% on current stock (which is worth having). So if you've got your eye on a Mulberry handbag you need to be there. I'm posting a link to my personal RSVP page which may not work because they usually fix it so you can't pass the invite on. If it doesn't then PM me with your name and email address and I'll try and do it for you.
  18. I bought a hardwood door. The shop isn't disputing that. The paperwork says hardwood. I specifically went shopping for a hardwood door and would never have bought an external door with softwood in it. My understanding is that hardwood has only minimal movement. Mine is bowed and split. Does anyone have any experience?
  19. I bought a new front door from a local firm at the end of last year. All the paperwork states that the door is hardwood. The wood has moved; it has bowed and surface cracks have appeared. I cannot double lock the door so my insurance is voided. I have not been able to lock the door for weeks. To make matters worse, the owner of the shop has been giving my builder the run-around for ages. He said he would come and have a look and didn't turn up. He does not return phone calls. Total time-waster. I've just been into the shop with my builder and told them in no uncertain terms that I'm not putting up with any more shit. The owner (who wasn't there but was contacted by phone), says he will come round tomorrow at 10.30. It is the opinion of the particular builder who installed the fixtures on this door that it is not hardwood. He says that there is pine in it. So the suspicion is that this is a softwood door with a hardwood veneer. I bought and paid for a hardwood door. Is there anyone out there with any knowledge on this subject that can offer any assistance? I would be grateful. Thanks. Px

Tim Minchin is playing at the Coronet at the Elephant on 28th Nov and it's quite a cheap ticket for him http://www.timminchin.com/gigs/
  21. There's a cherry picker on Lordship Lane installing Christmas lights. Can we not at least get Halloween out of the way first?
  22. Could you possibly be any more annoying? I don't think so. EVERYTHING IN CAPITAL LETTERS and you didn't take one minute of your precious time to actually engage with the forum and figure out where to post your advertisement.

  24. Freaking genius indeed. It's normally such car crash TV watching Mozza maul a journalist and this is the first time I've ever seen one get the upper hand. "You guys could cash in huge" - I wet myself. "Murder is delicious"; I might actually get a T shirt made.
  25. Over the years Mozza has consistently given interviewers a hard time so it's so funny to watch one give as good as he gets. I saw this last week and I'm still chuckling. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7iprVhXuEyg
