Ooh wee chirpy chirpy cheep cheep Chirpy chirpy cheep cheep chirp -
It's tragic that the fire at the vegetable warehouse in Coventry claimed the lives of four firefighters. The warehouse didn't have a water sprinkler system in place and I find that inexcusable. I am sure that all the facts will come out in due course but my own knee-jerk reaction to this news is that the greedy supermarkets pushing suppliers so hard that corners are cut and health and safety becomes an expensive luxury. I'm quite choosy about where I shop and I don't go near the big supermarkets. I prefer to shop locally in ED and whenever I do need a bigger shop I get an Ocado delivery. My perception is that Waitrose is one of the good guys. Is this right or is this just good PR? Does anyone out there have any insight into how to eat and shop ethically?

If we're voting for rude service then I would nominate the woman in the newsagent near Soup Dragon. She is always on the phone and treats the customers like they are one big inconvenience for bothering her. I've never once heard her say please or thank you to anyone. I won't go in there - I vote with my feet and use the other newsagent by Green & Blue - much better service.

I joined and so far I've been very impressed. There have been a couple of admin teething problems (to be expected of course) but they are trying so hard to get everything right. The bit where they check you out prior to joining up is extremely thorough. Is it worth it? Dunno yet - I'll let you know in a month.

The segment with the little girl in the red coat in Schindler's List.

Re Bowling for Columbine: towards the end Moore interviews Charlton Heston. Heston comes off as a rather dignified chap who actually invites Moore into his home, whereas Moore comes off as arrogant and manipulative. I'm sure this isn't what Moore had in mind - looks like he let his ego get the better of him.

An old Italian man lived alone in Philadelphia. He wanted to dig his tomato garden but it was very hard work as the ground was hard. His only son, Vincent, who used to help him, was in prison. The old man wrote a letter to his son and described his predicament: Dear Vincent, I am feeling pretty badly because it looks like I won't be able to plant my tomato garden this year. I'm just getting too old to be digging up a garden plot. I know if you were here my troubles would be over. I know you would be happy to dig the plot for me. Love, Dad A few days later he received a letter from his son: Dear Dad, Don't dig up that garden. That's where I buried the bodies. Love, Vinnie At 4 a.m. the next morning, FBI agents and local police arrived and dug up the entire area without finding any bodies. They apologized to the old man and left. That same day the old man received another letter from his son: Dear Dad, Go ahead and plant the tomatoes now. That's the best I could do under the circumstances. Love you, Vinnie

Well done -
At least you COULD stand in the standing area at O2 - try standing in the circle at Brixton Academy and you get a visit from the Brixton Stasi (I mean the staff) pretty quickly.

Never heard of it but your enthusiasm is infectious. I don't have a TV but I've just ordered the first series from Lovefilm (I watch on my laptop). I'll let you know.

I think if someone produced a severed arm to pay for a grocery shop at Sainsbury's then it might raise an eyebrow. I hardly see that going unnoticed and they'd have a hell of a job to explain it. Offhand (bad pun) I can't think of a viable excuse for being in possession of a severed arm.

Yes I too have many many fond memories of Brixton Academy but I really wouldn't go back there again unless it was a gig that I REALLY had to go to. The start of the downturn for me was the Pixies a few years back. The gig was completely oversold and we were packed in like sardines. I have seen some top artists at Brixton (e.g. Rolling Stones, Springsteen) but you could still comfortably get to the bar, get a drink, and get back to your space. That was out of the question at the Pixies gig because we were so tighly packed in. I almost had a panic attack at that gig - I was really scared. That was the beginning of the end of my beautiful relationship with Brixton Academy. These days I prefer to go all the way across town to go to, say, Shepherds Bush Empire or the Scala at Kings Cross or Koko. The Coronet would be perfect if it was used more. I haven't been to Indigo2 yet but I will give it a try. I saw Prince at O2 a few weeks back and we had great seats and it was a great gig. I really wouldn't want to be on one of the high tiers there though - they really are nosebleeds. O2 will attract a lot of the artists that would otherwise play Wembley. If it's a toss up between Wembley and O2 then O2 wins hands-down for easy access to South London.

I'm wearing Pink knickers too. I didn't think EDF forum was one of THOSE sorts of forums. -
I'm also not a Justin Timberlake fan but I was forced to see him (last year I think) at a small gig he did at Hammersmith Palais (alas now closed forever). He did a great set and had all the right moves. I wouldn't put myself out to see him again but I enjoyed watching him do a small gig and I bet the Coronet gig was fantastic. I wish more bands would play the Coronet because South London doesn't have that many decent music venues. Don't even get me started on how down-hill Brixton Academy has gone - rude staff; aggressive security; dirty; not enough toilets; won't let you stand up in the circle. I could fill a page on how crap Brixton Academy is.

Here's my favourite joke du jour: What's green and flies? An eco-hypocrite -

The joke isn't very funny but the thread title is hilarious - made me smile - thanks. -
Please...(don't start a new Foxtons thread/topic)

I'M SO SICK OF THE F WORD What about if we give the actual word "Foxtons" honorary status as a profanity. Then we could impose a cursing ban on the Forum and actually charge people for using the "F WORD". A pound per F seems reasonable. Maybe a whole tenner for anyone with the audacity to start a new thread with the F word in it. What would we do with all the ?????? FOXTONS FOXTONS FOXTONS FOXTONS Sorry, I got carried away there; just getting a few freeby Fs in before the ban. -

Just had the worst dinner at Sea Cow. We sat at the very far corner near the back wall. It was early evening (6.30) so we had the table to ourselves. All during dinner flies were circling around us. It began to be a real pain swatting them away. Anyway, in the middle of dinner my friend said "just turn round and look" and I did, and it was like that scene in Hitchcock's The Birds with all the big black birds in the playground; the wall behind me was just covered with flies. We got up immediately and left. I told the waitress why we were leaving and said we would pay for the food but not the wine because we had hardly touched it and were hardly going to linger with all the flies buzzing around. She responded "Oh yes I know about the flies in that corner". That's it for me - I'll never set foot in the place again.

No worries - none taken. Personally I'm not a fan of The Cure at all - I don't even own a CD! I know that lots of Cure fans tend to be hardcore though and I didn't want to see a thread start next week along the lines of "why didn't anyone tell us the Cure was reforming ..... tickets all sold out..... blah blah blah ..... I'm so sad I won't get to see them .... blah blah....". So I was just flagging it up.
-
The Cure is reforming for a "one off" at Wembley next March (Thursday 20th). At the moment the trend is for supposedly "one off" gigs to stretch into 50 date tours, but I think that this might, possibly be a genuine one off. This is a long-awaited appearance by The Cure so demand for tickets will be extremely high. They go on sale on Saturday morning at 9.00am and will sell out very quickly. If there are any really big Cure fans on the ED forum who absolutely must get tickets for this gig at all costs then please feel free to PM me and I will give you some advice to make sure you get them. Sorry but I really can't post ticket buying info directly on the forum because it's a public forum and someone might stumble across it on a google search - and I really don't want that.
-
That's a shame because you were keen to go. PM me if you're still interested and I'll find you tickets.
