    Great Gigs

I don't understand the Mighty Boosh; I don't get Noel Fielding (although he is sort of hot in a funny way) and I don't get Russell Brand. But I do know they have their following so I'm just posting here that they are doing a gig together (The Goth Detectives) on 28th July at the Lyceum Theatre (handy for the 176). It's a dear old do though (charity). There's a pre-sale now at www.ticketzone.co.uk. Ticketzone has currently sold out of the cheaper seats (?25) but you can always try Ticketmaster on Friday at 10.00am. Also, another thing to be careful of at the Lyceum is that it is a wide venue and you don't want to be stuck at the sides (I'm a huge fusspot when it comes to getting decent seats). The best seating plan is at www.theatremonkey.com
  2. I agree. I tried hugging a T-Wat once but it was all very one-sided. Get rid of them all.
  3. I agree with him. I tried hugging a tree once but it was all very one-sided. Get rid of them all.
  4. There was a Jewson lorry blocking LL this morning. Has Jewson got it in for ED or something?
  5. I was on the 176 this morning when this happened. The buses were diverted into Dulwich Village (East Dulwich Road) onto a road with a low bridge (an act of pure genuis given the nature of the original incident). The buses all stopped and put the passengers off so but there were so many buses blocking the road that there needed to be a diversion around the diversion.

  9. This is something my friend Peter sent to me a long time ago but I was reminded about it when reading about gay abuse on a forum thread recently. It pisses all over the whole biblical homosexuality abomination argument. Here you go: Dr. Laura Schlessinger is a radio personality who dispenses advice to people who call in to her radio show. Recently, she said that, as an observant Orthodox Jew, homosexuality is an abomination according to Leviticus 18:22 and cannot be condoned under any circumstance. The following is an open letter to Dr. Laura penned by a east coast resident, which was posted on the Internet. Dear Dr. Laura: Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate. I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the other specific laws and how to follow them: When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them? I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her? I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness - Lev.15:19- 24. The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense. Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians? I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself? A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination - Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this? Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here? Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die? I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves? My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? - Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14) I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.
  10. Buggie - yes it is the one you think it is. Made me sick too. A nurse actually kicks the poor woman to see if she moves. How shocking is that.
  11. Having lived in ED for many years now I can honestly say that I've never had a problem with Kings A&E and once, over Christmas of 1993, I actually found myself on life support there. Suffice it to say, I pulled through. I've just stumbled across this news report from a NYC emergency room - it's brutal http://www.snarkygossip.com/2008/07/02/shocking-video-of-mental-patient-who-is-ignored-until-she-dies/
  12. I have no clue what you're talking about but the best of luck - GO THRASH THE FRENCH!
  13. I just received this interesting PPT presentation
  14. I went to school in the late 60s/70s. I was educated privately at a school for young ladies (I actually just shuddered typing those words). It was about 95% white; the ?girls of colour? were Americans from an air base. I lived in a white area; there simply weren?t any black people where I lived at that time. I don?t remember stories like ?Little Black Sambo? but I do remember collecting Gollywog stickers from the marmalade jars. At school any reference to black people was by way of our weekly charity collections for ?the poor starving little black babies of Africa? (Roman Catholic convent school doncha know). Tarzan used to be on TV on Saturday mornings and I?m sure, looking back, it didn?t show African people in the best of lights. It?s all very embarrassing and strange to recall these references from so long ago. But, still, I do see with lots of my friends? kids now that they really are colour-blind because they?ve just grown up cheek by jowl.
  15. Just a thought regarding schoolchildren?. I do believe that, at least in the cities, many children grow up to be genuinely colour-blind; inner-city schools are melting pots and today's parents are likely to be more racist than the kids. Conversely, anything to do with sexuality and school children is beyond prickly. Young people need to come to terms with their own sexuality (in whatever form that may take) and that, to say the least, is a confusing time. Also, they are desperately trying to conform and be accepted by their peers. How miserable is it to be on the outside as a kid? Kids can be very very cruel. So I guess that if a young person in the school system is just beginning to think ?hang on a minute here, maybe I?m gay??; well that?s just got to throw up some pretty damned scary thoughts. It would need to be a very brave person to come out whilst still at school. It?s not a safe environment; it can be brutal. Sorry to ramble, I?m just getting to the point?. Teenagers talk a lot amongst themselves about sex (always have). I think that?s just part of trying to come to terms with themselves as sexual beings. Certainly the gay/straight question must be on the agenda, if not in the schoolyard then certainly in private thoughts. Some use the word ?gay? ad nauseum as adjective/adverb (insulting pack behaviour?). Whilst we, as adults, view this as discriminatory, even downright nasty, is there a case for saying that sometimes they may just be using ?gay?, albeit in a derogatory way, to talk about sex/gay issues? Perhaps? Sometimes? It is brutal and I personally don't know anyone who came out at school.

    Great Gigs

I was PMd by some forum people who missed out on STEVIE WONDER @ O2. He has added another O2 date (1 October) which is on presale now at www.livenation.co.uk and on general sale on Friday.
  17. Well done Brendan - brilliant post - you should get tanked more often. I actually saw him in the street once; in Muswell Hill of all places. He came out of a house and got into a car. It was an ordinary house and an ordinary car. But an extraordinary man and a pretty extraordinary moment I can tell you. I stopped dead in my tracks and stared at him and he nodded hello politely. Surreal. BTW ? I was not at all impressed with Wino changing the lyrics on Friday night. I'm usually pretty tolerant of Wino's behaviour because she obviously has her own demons, but that really lowered the tone.

Jah - How funny; never heard "No Moet No Showy" but very familiar with ?No Chandon No Band On?. I like it. I'm laughing. I'm gonna use it whenever I'm forced to RSVP "yes" to some train-wreck of a drinks party.

Jah - You?re right ? I guess he was ripped off a lot back in the day. I don?t know if there?s any truth in the legend of the cash in the sock/suitcase but I do want it to be true because I admire the simplicity of it. And it pissess all over the ?No Chandon No Band On? ethos of the more hedonistic rock culture.
  20. I'd also like to big up Mission - it rocks! Count me in.
  21. Could be a really slow process getting them evicted

    Great Gigs

Over the years I've heard really bad things about Chuck Berry doing lousy gigs and when I finally saw him live I had really low expectations. Apparently his meanness is legendary so he doesn?t tour with his own band; just hires musicians wherever he goes and doesn?t pay for rehearsals (as Jah Lush has already pointed out). There?s another rumour that he only plays when he?s been paid in cash and he keeps the money in his sock. Who knows? I saw him at the Festival Hall a few years back and the bill was split between Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis. It really was a fantastic gig and it blew me away; everyone was up and dancing all night. I think the gig was all the better because my expectations had been so low. A great night.
  23. I was quite offended when I saw the title of this thread and I'm even more offended now I've actually read it. So sorry that this happened to you Muffin. What a couple of pricks. For years I used to put up with men talking to my chest whilst I silently seethed. Then I learned the trick of bobbing down slightly until I could make eye-contact. So embarrassing for the guy because he knows he?s totally busted.

Elbow will be on tour in October and playing The Roundhouse on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th October. On sale Friday 27th June. Just a reminder to everyone to buy tickets directly from www.roundhouse.org.uk and avoid the excessive booking fees. Also for the Autumn - long awaited new vinyl and two Barbican gigs for Antony and the Johnsons. Public on-sale at the Barbican on 1st July.
  25. What a brilliant thread - I'm loving people's lists. For me - this is a job for the weekend. Gonna need some help with that whole uploading thing (I'm a true Luddite at heart).
