Little article on news today about possible lido. It seems as if it might be a fresh water pool using filtered water from the river Peck - design seems to be done by team who have designed the Thames pool.

Recommend your child's piano teacher pls
millymoll replied to jollymummy's topic in The Family Room Discussion
My kids (and I) had/have lessons at JASSPA - James Allen's Saturday school. Loads of teachers (so if one doesn't suit another might). The thing I've really enjoyed is that they organise concerts through the year - small informal ones for beginners and larger scale ones for more confident performers. -
Dog Kennel Hill Primary- advice needed
millymoll replied to LVE78's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hi - the website's back up now. I work there and (unsurprisingly) think it's great and recommend you come and visit us to get a feel for the school. My nephew is at Lyndhurst and he loves it there so I hope you'll be happy with whichever you choose. Feel free to PM me if you like (I'll try to be factual and not biased!) -
It isn't the clearest article I've ever read, but I don't know why you suggest he was drunk. It certainly is an important issue for those of us with offspring heading off to university this year. We thought, like many of our friends, that the loan was interest free, but it is indeed charged at 3% or so above the current interest rate and the interest starts mounting up from the day it is borrowed, not, as previously, when the degree is completed. This does indeed mean that some graduates will be paying off their loan for 30 years until the cut-off point, or they will be trying to avoid earning enough to pay it back - not great for encouraging young people to aspire to achieve their full potential.

Big Up my daughter, her friends and the Charter School
millymoll replied to ed_pete's topic in The Family Room Discussion
We're delighted too. Congratulations to teachers and pupils at TCS. Minder - I think I can work out who you are from your post. Well done to your graduate son and best wishes to your daughter for the future. Hope all's well with your dad. -
A huge thank you to the lady who found my daughter's clarinet which she had left in the street while meeting her friends on the way to school (not a mistake she'll repeat I think!) This kind lady not only found the clarinet but delivered it to our door. Many many thanks.

anyone found any of Ben Wilson's contributions to the Baroque the Streets part of Dulwich Festival?

Hi, We've been for the last 3 years with our children now aged 13 and 16 but went with friends with much younger children and we all loved it. Loads for children to do; as well as the music and theatre, dance, cabaret and comedy as well. Last year was incredibly wet but they did their best to lessen the mud by putting down loads of wood chip - but be prepared for it! Toilets in the family area perfectly respectable too, by and large. If you've been to Glastonbury you'll think it's tiny, but if, like us, it's the first festival you've been to, it will seem enormous (and phone coverage not great). Only problem we've had is that I've had to join the family after Friday work and in order to get into the family area I've had to contact a family member at the gate and get them to come and vouch for me which took literally a couple of hours.

good schools and help for dyslexic 6 year old
millymoll replied to wodey's topic in The Family Room Discussion
If you're looking for a State primary school then Lyndhurst has a specialist Dyslexia unit. However, as it is quite a small school you'd have to live very close to get a place... -
Charter School fundraising door to door?
millymoll replied to nunheadmum's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Please do contact the school. My children are at the school and I feel staff there wouldn't be happy about the going from door to door. Nunhead seems a long way from the school's catchment area too... -
GCSE Results 2012 for Lewisham & Southwark
millymoll replied to BB100's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I do agree with Townley Green and Fuschia. Of course a school shouldn't be judged on a year's results - we all know intakes vary. However, I do think it says something about a school if they try to hide their results. -
GCSE Results 2012 for Lewisham & Southwark
millymoll replied to BB100's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Do Kingsdale think they are the only school that has been affected by the English GCSE results? Other schools are disappointed too and I'm sure papers have been sent back from many schools for re-marking but at least they're publishing their results anyway. With year 6 parents currently trying to choose schools for next year it seems unfair to withhold this information from them. -
HELP! Spare child's guitar for pupil in need?

HELP! Spare child's guitar for pupil in need?
millymoll replied to bluesuperted's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hi Bluesuperted. Pretty sure from your name that I work with your husband and probably have 1/2 size guitar no longer being used. Might be rather the worse for wear but better than nothing. Will have a look and let you/him know before he goes out and spends his hard-earned wages! -
former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?
millymoll replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Dear James, I am curious as to why very few secondary schools have posted up their GCSE results this year - only two or three have put up their results and there is scarcely a mention on the Southwark Council website. Is this because some schools are trying to cover up their results prior to the approaching closing date for this year's Year 6s? We all understand that there have been some shock results this year, especially in English but why hide results? -
My brother and sister-in-law had a terrible time with their tongue-tied baby. It was several months before TT was diagnosed, despite mum and grandfather having been born with same condition. Baby of course lost weight and cried constantly as he was hungry, sister-in-law bullied about breastfeeding by health visitors. Nightmare. Finally found a saviour in a breastfeeding advisor at Kings - don't know if she's still there as this was nearly 5 years ago. She spotted the problem and arranged the snip within a day or two but what a huge, avoidable misery...

The nursery has been empty for some time since the new building was finished on the main site so it shouldn't impact on the children too much, though a horrible thing for them to see. Jessie, you're right it may not be vandals, especially in this weather. However, I was talking to a teacher from Bessemer recently (my kids went there some years ago) and she was pretty much expecting it to be destroyed as there had already been so much damage done to the empty building.
-
I understand vandals have started fires in that unused building before.

You've picked a good time to have children in East Dulwich: lots of good schools and I'm sure you'll find lots of people who have children at Heber or Goodrich who will sing their praises (as well as the other local schools. My daughter left Heber a couple of years ago and we were impressed - nice staff, children and parents.

Is NCT Antenatal class worth it?
millymoll replied to Ramble66's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I'm sure it doesn't matter where you do an ante-natal class - NCT, free hospital or whatever but I do think it's fantastic to be a part of a group of people all experiencing the same thing. My children are now 16 and 13 but we are still in touch with some of the NCT group we joined at the time and I have really strong memories of us all supporting one another during the inevitable worries and then having people to spend time with when we had newborn babies - a really isolating time for lots of people. As for the "just like you" comment, that wasn't really the case, but perhaps back then it wasn't expensive, we wouldn't have been able to afford it if it had been... Anyway, hope you find some group that suits. -
Not quite local but Surrey Quays farm does pottery and printing workshops for children - don't know dates but they probably have a website with details.

Oops, put this in the lounge by mistake - sorry to repeat it! My daughter, 13, with quite a large group of school friends, was approached by a man yesterday "doing a 'survey'" in Dulwich Park. He walked away with signatures and their names and the name of their school, though they were sensible enough not to give out addresses or phone details etc. Can't think what he was after but it doesn't sound very innocent. Do warn your children not to give out any information. Our daughter and friends were gutted that although they have all learned repeatedly about not giving information out they were lulled into doing just that.
