Are there limits to Political Protest?
Marmora Man replied to Marmora Man's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I was going to make much the same point as Loz. An EDL march, through Tower Hamlets or elsewhere, is a demonstration of support for their particular beliefs. Properly conducted I have no problem with this - tho' I would work hard and long to ensure that everyone recognised the EDL beliefs are abhorrent. The UK Uncut "protest" was targeted at a single individual politician, his family and their home. I recognise the strength of UK Uncut's feelings but I abhor their methods in this particular case. In answer to Loz's questions: a. NO b. NO -
I imagine DavidH means that neighbours are more likely to earn their living by working in an office, wearing "business clothing" and making meaningful decisions about marketing, IT, other peoples lives, money, health or other matters than driving a bus, digging the road or serving on the tills in Tesco. Also that a greater proportion of the newspapers read are broadsheet rather than tabloid, that organic food has a higher priority than economy and that neighbours would ideally take two holidays a year - one skiing and the other to somewhere warm but not accessible by Easy Jet.

You recognised and expanded on my point elegantly - thank you. -
I see UK Uncut targeted Nick Clegg's home with hundreds of anti-cuts campaigners staging a "street party" protest outside his house in south-west London. While I'm all for political protest, free speech and democracy I believe it to be over the top to target an individual member of the government in his home. No doubt some will argue that the publicity that resulted for UK Uncut made it worthwhile but I suggest it further diminishes the nature of political debate and will deter otherwise sensible people from engaging in mainstream politics in the future.

Cottage in Cornwall, roof rack to carry windbreaks, surf boards, buckets & spades, rugs. 3 days out of 5 you'll be on the beach with sand between your toes, splashing in the sea with children, crabbing in the local harbour, eating pasties. 2 days in five you'll be sheltering from the rain - but it makes a great holiday.

As I understand it a lot of the sales (but not all) will be to raise funds for local charities - so the commercial transaction may deliver something more positive than simply personal gain.

Woodrot - I note you use the phrase "your England" this implies you are not English. Where do you hail from and what are the strengths & weaknesses of your mother country? -

The success of the Goose Green Fair seems to prove the point made in another thread about the Irish Festival that council subsidy isn't needed when the event is attractive enough and volunteers can locate appropriate sponsorship.

Squeeze the innards ourt of two sausages per person - ideally a flavoursome sausage. Fry gently with onions, best if the sausage "catches" and dark caramelised crunchy bits are clinging to the cooked sausage. Throw in some herbs (sage is good, tarragon OK, basil also good) if you have them, a good grind of coarse black pepper and a glass on white wine - reduce and scrape up all crunchy bits. Add a dollop of cream, creme fraiche or yoghurt. Stire and pour over any suitable pasta. Not quite store cupboard stuff but close too and very good.

Despite having a beard I still shave regularly. Recently I gave up on canned / tubes of shaving cream in favour of Badger Hair brush and specialist shaving soap. I'm about to give up on hideously expensive multi blade razors (cost > ?13.00 for the razor + ?12.00 for six replacement blades) in favour of a good, old fashioned, safety razor (cost approx ?20.00, ?10 for 100 replacement blades). Has anyone else been down this route - not sure where to source the safety razor blades from - tho' this Article provides some advice.

Tried a new way to cook cauliflower which is great - no more soggy tasteless cauliflower. Break one head of cauli into florets - place in tray. Sprinkle with four tablespoons of mixed olive oil & lemon juice. Add plenty of ground pepper & salt. Roast at 200c for 25 - 30 mins. Grate some Parmesan over and serve. It looks fantastic and tastes better.

Woodrot - you only provide a binary choice Love or Hate. Most of us are too nuanced for that, so why not propose a scaled approach? 1 = Consuming Hatred 10 = Uncritical Love With ZERO (0) to represent the "frankly I don't give a damn" position. For your list my scores are: The Royal Family The Queen - 8, the rest 5 Nick Clegg 0 Thatcher 8 Richard Branson 6 Former members of Genesis 0 Apple 7 And to add a few more: Ken Livingstone 2 Arthur Scargill 2 New Nexus 2 Stalin 2 Hitler 1 Katie Price 0
