    Ceramic Art and Life Join us for an evening with Julian Stair OBE, one of UK’s leading potters, who will talk about the ideas that have shaped his practice over five decades - works that range from the everyday to rites of passage. Julian is a leading historian of English studio ceramics. He completed a PhD at the RCA researching the critical origins of English studio pottery and has written extensively throughout his career. He has received awards in recognition of his contribution to contemporary practice including an OBE in 2022 for his services to ceramics. Yale University Press and the Sainsbury Centre published a monograph on his work ‘Memory Material Ceramics’ in 2024. He has exhibited internationally since 1982, where he has worked in over 30 public collections including at the V&A, British Museum, American Museum of Art & Design, Mashiko Museum of Ceramic Art and many more.     A one-day intermediate level weekend workshop led by Birgit Pohl Learn how to attach a wooden batt to the wheel head. Practice a variety of flatware shapes on the batt. Immerse yourself in throwing on the wheel for a full day! You can choose up to three pots which will be trimmed, glazed and fired for you. Please note This intermediate level course will not cover centring or pulling up. Participants must be able to centre 1kg of clay before signing up to the course. Please speak to your teacher if you are not sure if this course is right for you. Cost £150 Concessionary places £75. She aims to balance precision of form with fluidity in surface decoration, being particularly drawn to European ceramics of the early to mid-20th century. This course lasts for five weeks - every Thursday afternoon 3-5pm from 31 October to 28 November. During the weekly 2-hour sessions: - You will learn various hand-building techniques, such as pinching, coiling and slab building. - To finish your pieces, you will learn decorating techniques, experimenting with slips and inlay. - You can keep up to six pieces which will be fired for you at the end of this course. The cost of all materials and firings are included in your course fee. The cost of the five week course is £200. The Bell House Pottery has a scheme to support those who cannot afford the full cost.     Click here to go to the Eventbrite booking page At this one day workshop you will make tealights and Christmas decorations out of paper porcelain. You will choose ten porcelain decorations and one porcelain tealight holder, which will be fired for you unglazed. This event is suitable for all levels. No previous experience with clay required. Groups welcome. Tickets are £130 per person for a whole day session 11 am - 5 pm. This includes the cost of materials, glazing and firing. About the teacher After decades as a ceramics hobbyist, Kyra has, in the last seven years, become a full-time maker and teacher at the Kiln Rooms and at the Bell House Pottery. She mostly makes thrown table ware and occasionally decorative stoneware, porcelain pots and jewellery. Kyra’s work is on display and for sale at galleries in London, and in Greece.
