reporting verbally abusive comments on social networks

If there are bullying PMs then they must be reported to admin immediately, it's completely against T&Cs of usage and will result in the deactivation of their account if they are deemed to have broken them. If they create alter egos then the computer can be banned too, not just the account. I'm, not sure bullying by definition can be subtle can it? That just sounds like persistent disagreements to me, but like i say, if someone feels bullied then for god's sake report it, we're not schoolkids with some playground 'we don't grass' code of honour here. If a grown up is bullying then they don't deserve access to this service. -

Have you written a book about your personal knowledge of the area at all? I'll pre order it from Chener's!! J.R. Hartley is a good pen name, it's pretty much how you look in my mind's eye anyway ;) -

From interviewee on BBC about recent spate of trollings. "But disagreements on the forum all too easily turned to abuse. Finding out that respected professionals in their mid-fifties could post in that way was an eye opener. I've since discovered that forums have a habit of turning sour as it only takes a minority to skew them. As a format they've lost their innocence." I know that many people feel the balance of free speech to censorship is too far in the direction of the latter on this forum, but he's right, it only takes a few to subvert and recast the general tone of a forum and ultimately spoil then ruin it for the majority of users. Given those difficulties I think it's about right here. I'd refute Sue's assertion that there's bullying on here, we're acutely sensitive to such matters and respond actively to reports and PMs. As far as the OP is concerned, if MSN aren't responding (and they have a huuuuuge user base so it might just be a case of a very big backlog) I'd really take it up with the child and parents in question, at least if you think it has any chance of achieving anything given the situation. Tricky! -
Johann Hari - Hypocrite or Victim?

I thought the first bit was a bit mealy mouthed to be honest. It's a bit going through the motions to save his career rather than having genuinely learned some humility. The journalism course he's put himself on feels like one of those speed awareness courses that people who go 25 mph over tower bridge go on, thinking 'i know how to drive, i missed one sign....' the whole time. And he's protesting too much about the french thing (Private eye really savaged him on that) meaning that it was probably the only real quote he's used in ten years. But hats off, at least he's held his hands up and said sorry, it remains to be seen whether the lesson he's learnt is 'don't believe the hype' or 'don't get caught next time' -
Someone fell down a hole, whether or not they made it to wonderland was not revealed to me. This spot is something of a building site at the bottom of someone's garden and I'm guessing someone landed in the foundations dig.

I refuse to read any books and we are just bumbling along like parents have for the last half a million years or so, occasionally asking our parents' advice and listening to my gut instinct and what feels right for the mocklet, who has the biggest say in most things frankly. Kids are all so different I can't see how anY set of theories can encompass the vast array of unique personalities that is the human race. I'll find out how well or badly we did in about twenty years time I guess.

smashing night at Broadhall Way last night. Stevenage absolutely demolished the once mighty Sheffield Wednesday 5 - 1, and frankly it could have been seven or eight. I had to admire the owls chants of 'easy easy' when they got their consolation though. My owls mate joked that at least they hadn't had a sending off, about one minute before they managed that too. Considering I'm usually considered something of a Jonah when turning up to games I have to say I'm very happy with that. Roll on the Championship ;)

and some of us dads have been known to look after the wee bairns too you know. Plus I haven't worn high heels or lipstick for aaaages! I do talk about poo a lot though and am not afraid to put bottom to nose in public ;).

I've never been done there because I've never been in a position to do more than about 2 mph, and generally avoid at all costs. Are there speed cameras in Rotherhithe tunnel which is also 20 mph?

Considering the state off our cricket team moos, perhaps we shouldn't make too much of that.

The Bahamas mousa is non sequitur, the illegally invading a country that suffered half a million deaths? I'm thinking that, on the whole, is a pretty bad thing to do. We suffered fewer than that in world war two.

No such thing as a free lunch, I guess it's less interest as it's our money, more administrative costs. -

http://www.kiva.org/ From what I can see this this is a really good idea. Find some nice worthy types around the world trying to set up a small business or buy some more grain to keep their cattle going until market time. Lend them $25 or more to help them hit their target and then they pay the money back. overall 98% successful repayments in the almost $200 million lent so far in about 5 years since its inception. At least have a click and a think if nothing else. We all slag off the banks, so here's a chance to cut them out of the equation and help the third world to sort itself out! -
50p tax rate - perception or impact
mockney piers replied to Marmora Man's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
There are some very odd misunderstandings there DJKQ, not to mention some conflation in the roles of retail and investment banks. There's nothing intrinsically wrong with what banks do, it's just with laxer regulation and a misplaced trust in the number crunchers, they've had much riskier operating models. If it wasn't for the fractional reserve system we wouldn't have the modern world frankly, it really is money that makes the world go round. After all, many of the failed businesses due to the recession failed because of the credit crunch, ie the banks reluctance to lend money meant they couldn't get the short term loans needed to operate their businesses. The 'disappearing money' wasn't anything to do with the fractional reserve system, that's all accounted for, it's to do with the market driven downward pressure on the values of the investments,ie shares, funds and to a much lesser extent, bonds. ---- If you want to do some good in the world, democratise and take out the middle man in the whole lending and borrowing game using a non fractional reserve lending model then you can do worse than take part in this worthy project and lend some of your hard earned cash to those who need it rather than dump it in a bank for some computer programme to determine who will get it for their buy-to-let mortgage ;) http://www.kiva.org/ -

Weirdly I feel the same way about that bloke going 'these are the words, these are the words, the words that maketh murder' in that sort of nursery rhyme fashion, it pretty much ruins the song for me, but not the album. -
King creosote and John Hopkins live on 6 music tonight, and they've just played excavating Rita from the forthcoming Half Man Half Biscuit album. Woo hoo!

I'm quite partial to Metronomy's album as it goes, but I think she's a worthy winner. It's not like there are more than about 25 people in the country who've heard of her.
