I went to the meeting. The team from Charter came across as great group of competent and professional people with one thing on their minds - delivering an outstanding school in permanent buildings ASAP on the hospital site. We all need to get behind that sole objective. Its not an easy task to stand in front of a packed room with some strong emotions, without being able to give much certainty over exactly where the new school will be, when it will be ready and where a temporary school will be located. Given those constraints they were a great team. The future head particularly was really encouraging - calm, confident, approachable, dedicated, experienced, ambitious... The issue of most debate at the meeting and as noted above, was of the nodal point. This will determine the admissions for this school for future generations, To me the only choice is to be in the middle of their site, whenever that is known. Anywhere else, either on the plot, or even off it as some suggest, will be hugely contentious and divisive for the East Dulwich community.

Cynical cap on? The developer seeks permission for 2no flats on the roof, with 8no small subdivided offices on levels 1 and 2 complete with WC and kitchens. When works complete, then developer exploits the coalition government's temporary relaxation which permits change of use from offices to residential, without planning permission [rule change ends May 2016]. So achieves 10 flats and no affordable.

Its been noted above that the building already has flats on the top floor, so it's height isn't proposed to increase. I doubt anyone would state the current building is 'high rise'. It may help everyone if the title to this thread was changed cause it is alarmist and misleading. Other areas of London which had a high street modest in scale only 10 years ago have gone down the route of taller buildings, such as Clapham High Street. This proposal is nothing of the sort. For those who are more likely to get distracted by the shopfronts when wandering down our Lane: I agree the office layouts to floors 1 and 2 are curious little units, with oversized kitchens. Maybe they are anticipating staff who are adverse to M&S sandwiches...

I was there this morning and came back wondering why we have to put up with facilities such as these in the UK which are in such a desperate need of rebuilding, even after a long-term and high-spending Labour government! As with all recycling, the best place for Tetrapak would be right outside my front door, in the blue box i have been provided with - that would make most sense. AndrewDBlack - I have to admit, I am the son of an economist - not that in any way I claim to be an expert! Clearly If there is one sole provider in an area for any given service, then they have a monopoly. It doesn't matter if it is a cable TV supplier or the train company on a certain route - we often have no choice who we can use. If there were two companies, then there would be a choice. Three or four would be healthy. I really do remain to be convinced why this little high street of ours requires to have twenty estate agents. Only indian restaurants comes close. Lordship Lane offers a useful selection of local services but wouldn't it be better, if we could choose, to have fewer estate agents and a variety of everything else? like a choice of: book shops butchers clothes shops delis fishmongers glaziers joiners music shops opticians picture framers printers / stationers restaurants - another french or italian shoe shops video rentals i could go on... These are the things that I certainly use more regularly than an estate agent.

MORE AGENTS MEANS HIGHER FEES Quite simply, the more agents there are, the fewer properties they each get to sell and so they have to offset this will higher fees. At the moment they will all be struggling to make ends meet as they still have the same outgoings as they did a year ago for rent, staffing, advertising, cars etc yet are selling fewer properties. We only use an estate agent when we move house, for the rest of the time they offer nothing to our community and high street. How many agents would it take to create some competition in any given area? 3, 4, 5? The sooner some close the better.
