Can you make roots in East Dulwich for a growing family?
mrs.lotte replied to benb's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I see loads of young teens; in the cinema, cafe Nero, skatepark, GBK. My son is 11 and we have no plans to move at all. Nb no shortage of secondary places this year and charter ED opening means we are very well served. -
Re Charter ED I think that the PAN next year will also be 120 whilst the permanent site will be only partially built (sports facilities to be completed by then for example) Thereafter it will double BUT that year is the mega bulge peak need year (according to the Southwark stats) and I believe there will be a lot of siblings (certainly the fact it is mixed and I have a daughter who will be starting secondary in 2018 makes this the most attractive option for us this year over the boys school - which I think is an otherwise fantastic option - that we were also offered). This is one of the reasons I think it was short sighted of Kingsdale to bulge quite so dramatically this year limiting, I would have thought, their ability to do so in future years when need is greater. Anyway I'm not seeking to freak out parents with children going into secondary next year, personally I thought there were some brilliant options which fly under the radar - Deptford Green, The Elm Green and COLA for example and others which are also great but not yet as popular as Charter and Kingsdale but have super ofsted/results/facilities - eg the Harris schools and St Thomas the apostle.

School Application - Child Benefit Letter
mrs.lotte replied to Angelina's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Ah wish I had seen Ellie's short cut guide before hanging on the line this morning. I was told that because I have opted out of CHB the request for a letter has to go to some sort of head office and will take up to 4 weeks (uh it has to be provided by 23rd March!) -
School Application - Child Benefit Letter
mrs.lotte replied to Angelina's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I opted out of CHB when it became means tested. I don't have any paperwork. Anybody know what to do in those circs?! Not finding the HMRC website very enlightening Thanks -
Yep no story for itv here either. Offered Charter ED and St Thomas (2nd on our list) so really amazing choices. Suprised at Kingsdale as it bulged last year too and has no more space than before when need is going to peak in 2018, may have been better to save bulges till then but hopefully new charter will have a bigger intake then and take up strain. Not hearing any horror stories. For those yet to take this journey please remember that life doesn't begin and end with one or two schools, we have some really fantastic yet bizarrely undersubscribed schools on our doorstep. And breathe ...

Charter East Dulwich offer date
mrs.lotte replied to mummydaddyme's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Asked this question at this evening's meeting. Was told that offers will be sent by letter on 29th Feb. If not received the next day you will be able to call then but it won't be computerised and it won't be before national offers day. -

State secondary schools further afield - any advice?
mrs.lotte replied to redjam's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I have been doing the rounds in the last few weeks and have been very pleasantly surprised at how fabulous the schools are; I've seen COLA, Elm Green, Forest Hill boys, St Thomas, Harris ED, Deptford Green, Charter and Kingsdale and would very be happy for my son to go to any of them. Am so pleased that many people seem to be waking up to the idea that there are more than just one or two schools that are good and worth supporting and that some of the schools on that list are under subscribed is extraordinary. Anyway, having approached the whole situation with significant trepidation my happy conclusion is that the most popular schools seem absolutely fine but not necessarily better than a fine selection of excellent and undersubscribed relatively nearby schools. -
What do 10yr old boys like re presents?
mrs.lotte replied to yeknomyeknom's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Football and goalie gloves, Nike tracksuit bottoms or hoody, skateboard, the bear grylls series of books (currently super cheap at the book people) headphones, iTunes voucher, subscription to First News or the Beano or The Pheonix -
I think that the original post was meant to be a joke

I can see that it may put a number of people off although it doesn't appear to have any effect on the curriculum and being a religious school hasn't dented the popularity of St John's or St Anthony's.
-
I guess it just takes a while for a school's reputation to catch up with the reality but I'm very surprised that it's undersubscribed in Y7, bet it won't be next year. I notice that there is another open day tomorrow and an open evening on Thursday, I'd encourage anyone looking for an outstanding local place for a boy to go. 50% non catholic according to the Head

Had a tour of St Thomas the Apostle today. It was surprisingly poorly attended compared to others I'd been to. I thought it was a cracking school with fantastic results an amazing Ofsted and my friend who has recently started working there raves about the fantastic behaviour. However it seems to be overlooked locally and a friend of mine at St Anthony's tells me that it is rare for boys to transfer from there to STAC. Does anyone have any experience of the school or know why it is that it is not as popular as others or is it just catching up?

Goose Green Primary After School club
mrs.lotte replied to RoseJadeH's topic in The Family Room Discussion
My children have been going to the ASC for several years. They make use of the playground and halls when they can and go on trips (park, library, adventure playground). My children are big eaters and they rarely need anything more to eat that they have had at the ASC. We have had some very impressive art/craft creations come back home. Also echo Dawn's comments re the mixing of years - the older ones really do look out for and play with the younger children who themselves then feel pretty chuffed that they have friends in others years. We also use the breakfast club where they get a hot meal and squeeze in activities and exercise before school. It's very reasonably priced and the hours make working acheivable (from 7.30 - 9 for BC and 3.30 - 6.30 ASC) Welcome to the school - he's going to love reception, those teachers and that playground is awesome) -
My (dyspraxic) 10 year old son uses Nessy fingers and we rate it for him Does he have access to touch typing at school? Ask school for him to have keyboard lessons and what programme they used, might be best to use same programme at home.
