  1. My daughter is similar but the issue surrounds nappy changes, although now toilet trained. Whilst you need the doctor to see anything you do that upsets is going to instill the fear that little bit more. I agree with gaining control but I also understand its hard in these situations. I've always tried to make a game of things, and tried to explain everything in advance. Doctors are nice and are there to help, she can whisper you anything she doesn't like if she feels unhappy while she is there etc and she can have a nice treat when it's over. Do you have an iPhone or any such device or distraction that you can give to her to play on or anything while you lay her down to be looked at? Also I've found blowing between the legs gently helps my daughter to feel more comfortable opening her legs to be checked over or cleaned during nappy changes. She used to throw right fits of hysteria much like you describe just during a simple nappy change for well over a year! Wish you all the best, I strongly doubt this will be something that lasts, as she gets older she will begin to realise more that doctors are only there to help. To be honest, issues down below are quite nasty and she probably feels quite sensitive and doesn't want anyone poking around.
  2. I completely feel your pain. I've suffered migraines since I was 15, all centred around my periods. I have various other health conditions linked to hormones, which affect migraine also. I used to get 3 episodes a year, upto 16 weeks constant migraine with no relief but then remission of 3 months before entering another episode. This year I had a constant episode of 6.5 months, no remission, day and night it was the hardest thing I've ever had to deal with. My neurology consultants have been through so many medications I'm at the end of my list of recommendations now. I've been on antidepressants, the strongest prescription pain killers I can be prescribed in a range of different drug categories and anti epileptic medication too. I'm still taking the anti epileptic drug after coming off the antidepressant because of the sedative effect and literally feeling like a zombie all day. Nothing works for me, I really feel anyones frustration at migraines especially females! Ive been prescribed gym membership on prescription, also accupuncture (which I'm currently doing) and paid privately to see a chiropractor who did manage to put me in remission but I'm waiting a few months to see what happens with my headaches. So far I've been almost headache free for 6 weeks. Another thing to consider is the condition of your mattress. I was sleeping on a mattress that had done its rounds for sure and was ready to be replaced. After replacing I've noticed differences in my migraines even. I also sleep with the flattest pillow I can, but I don't like the tempur pillows recommended for migraine use, they make mine worse. Have you tried naproxen or diclofenac? Available on prescription from your GP but something I'm always prescribed at hospital and take on top of my medications if needed. Although I don't find relief from it I hear a lot of people do. They are both powerful NSAIDs. Natural remedies to try include feverfew, I'm waiting and waiting to try this but no one can tell me if it will affect all my daily medications or other health conditions at all. This is meant to be one of the most amazing migraine treatments. My sister uses after over 19 years of migraine and says she wouldn't use anything else ever again. There is information online if you search it in google. Also hear all the time to avoid a lot of product around your periods to reduce the occurrence of migraine including caffeine, sugar, red meat. This may work for some. The pill definitely is not good, most contraceptive pills shouldn't be used in women (or should be monitored very closely) with a history of migraine. I'm currently on norethisterone which thankfully isn't affecting my migraine as of yet - touchwood. Although ideally should not be used in migraine sufferers, if your using for contraceptive use only it may be worth talking to your doctor about other options. I have a lot of information after years of research into hormonal controlled migraine, and there is a wealth of valuable information online. There's a brilliant 'wiki how' page on controlling migraine and relief. http://www.wikihow.com/Prevent-Migraines Edited to add link
  3. Anything my daughter wants to know I tell her honestly without being a) too adult or b) too out of this world stupid. She is 3 and a half. Has known where babies come from and has been interested asking questions since around 2?! She knows about periods etc too, although not much. Just that she will have them when she gets older. One girl in our school grew up in a very religious household, until the age of 17 she (very honestly) thought babies were born through the belly button and didn't know how they got there in the first place. I recommend Mummy laid an egg by Babette Cole too, we had much fun reading this when we were younger. My mum and dad never told us anything, ever. Always ignored every possible question apart from one big argument between me and my little sister about whether babies come out the 'front bum' or 'back bum' to which they only pointed to say who was right, then laughed for weeks. Stupid parents.
  4. Well mines been doing this for weeks, not just since yesterday. Call failed, call failed, call failed.
  5. We go to Dulwich Library on Thursdays quite a bit for the baby and toddler sessions they run 1.30 to 3pm and in the morning to but unsure of the time. There is normally a good range of babies and all ages upto around 4 some days. My daughter is 3.5 nearly, I struggle to find things to do with her too, local to Dulwich.
  6. I requested mornings, but got one full day, 2 afternoons and one morning due to 4 children not getting school places. I really desperately wanted morning places as L desperately needs a routine. Her sleep is a nightmare. I was banking on nursery sorting this, you know early morning, must get up, play play play, early to bed. But it doesn't look likely to happen. Ours are literally all over the show. It's a nightmare. I'd definitely go for mornings. But then again, it's what's more suited to you, what your routine and agenda is like.. Everyone's different and has different preferences don't they.
  7. I'm praying for a breakthrough in the ongoing research into male oral contraceptives. They think it's still several years off, but it's very realistic. That will be the day! I too am very sensitive to hormones and have several chronic gynaecological issues and am still painfully waiting more diagnosis. On pill right now, hate it. Consultants keep pushing contraceptives, I keep taking, keep complaining they make things worse. I tried coil, fitting failed. They offered to do it during a surgical procedure I was having anyway under general but I refused. FYI it can be done at kings under local anaesthetic as minor surgery. Besides that I'm not allowed to try anything with other than progestrogen only. Would love to try natural contraception, but my partner wouldn't trust it. He doesn't want more kids, I do, but with medical conditions I'm in limbo as to risk leaving it, or to rush to do it now. It's hard slog being a woman sometimes..
  8. Vaseline as a makeup remover! I swear, my mum has used it always since she was 15, her skin is absolutely amazing. Needless to say I now do the same ;-) Don't buy expensive pore strips. If you buy the sachets of powder gelatine in supermarket you can make your own. 2 tsp of gelatine to 2 tsp of milk or water mix and pop in the microwave for 10-20 seconds until you have a glue texture then brush on your T-zone, wait to dry and peel off. Perfectly safe, cheap and works fantastically. Highly recommend. Also if you wear nail varnish, I'm a addict. Through my extensive years of collecting, and working through beauty at boots I came to the conclusion very quickly that expensive nail varnishes are the biggest waste of money. I used to spend ?20 per pot, easily. To apply it and it to be flaking off within 48 hours. So I started trying cheaper versions, much to my hearts discontent. NYColour 60 second polishs are amongst the best, lasting upto 2 weeks on toes and a week on fingers. Also BeautyUK last extremely well too. Some days I find it really hard painting my nails, even with a 3 years old, but it's one of those things that makes you feel soooo much better, especially during summer. Has to be done. I never use salons for extensions etc due to the damage it causes my nails and the price!!
  9. Haven't got involved in this thread as of yet. A) it's a witch - trying out a recycled witch bottle B) someone is trying their new shewee, or C) someone feels mighty famous off the back of EDF thread of the year. Quite frankly, I think someone is obviously finding this all very entertaining. Suprised no-one has seen the phantom bottle dropper yet though. It's been a regular occurrence over a long period of time now. The longer this thread goes on, no doubt the longer the bottles will appear all round Dulwich. There are stories all over the internet of this happening, one very recently in Bury St Edmunds. Can samples not be taken and tested for DNA or such? Supposing the person is on the DNA database that is? Or that it is intact urine? Also, is it a offence to dump urine in bottles in a street etc? Or is it just an issue of fly tipping/littering?
  10. I was going to post a boden maxi that I wore to my sisters wedding last year but also wear casually as a maxi in the summer. It's suitable for both. Because of the neckline it was perfect for breastfeeding although my daughter had stopped at that point. I checked the boden site and they don't appear to sell it anymore. Although the dress Bellenden Belle has posted is almost identical but shorter. I'd say that's a perfect option and can easily be dressed up or down for any occasion or day out. Good price aswell. Agree you can't even tell its a breastfeeding dress.
  11. Lucky it was just sudocream! At the same age my daughter coated herself in fake tan after sneaking out of our bed mid lie in and pulling out my goodie box from under the bed.. You can laugh if you like. X
  12. I second oil, then rub with cotton wool. As kids we used to rub with salt too to get the extra stubborn bits off. Wouldnt use anything chemical based etc, they really aren't needed. Vaseline meant to be good aswell, rubbed with kitchen roll.
  13. I always cook my Bolognese with red wine. After saut?ing the onions and garlic, I add a glass of wine, reduce for around 10 minutes, add the tomato and blah blah blah then allow to simmer for 40-60 minutes. My daughter has never suffered ill effects.
  14. There we're several wires along east dulwich grove a few weeks ago, I'm sure of it. I presume these are the traffic count devices. If these weren't done by the council, would they of been done by whoever is in charge of the works going on controlled by traffic lights and the corner past the hospital right now? Which I may add need attention too. Yesterday they let so much traffic through they got backup up all the way to the Townley road lights and no cars could get through on the other side of the roadwork lights as the jam was running through the works. Everyone was beeping, buses were sitting there, lights were green but not movement could take place. I even saw cars considering overtaking several cars to jump through the system and the red, before backing out.
  15. I've nearly been hit more than once crossing outside the hospital. Cars just speed right through the crossing even if your actually on it already. I have physically counted at one point, whilst waiting to cross 11 cars failing to stop. One car stopped on one side, then the other side no one stopped, the car that did stop got really angry at the other cars, beeping them etc for failing to stop at a paedestrian crossing. The whole road just really infuriates me. 3 crossing, none of which are safe to use. The speed of cars coming down there at night I also agree is ridiculous, although I don't live there anymore. But we have the same on dulwich common, regularly I hear cars doing what must be definitely in excess of 70mph. Side by side racing, very dangerous overtaking, wheelies on motorbikes. Give some road users a straight and clear road space, they will take it as a racetrack...
  16. Your daughter is exactly the same age as mine and we have exactly the same problem. She did it all fine at 23 months but wanted to stay in nappies so I let her as she was still young. It's driving me insane still buying the things, I shouldn't have to. Feel to just confiscate them, they are like her safety blanket. She has lovely new peppa pig knickers in the drawer, hardly worn. If they are worn she poos in them and then gets scared and won't dare put knickers on again for a while. I never, ever tell her off for accidents, I always tell her it's fine we all had to learn at some point and I won't ever be cross at her. I show her I'm wearing knickers, she watches me on the toilet. Everything I can do I do. I've never pushed her, Im one for self independence and feel when she is ready she will just do it herself but she starts preschool in September and I've told her repeatedly she must do it this time as they wont change her nappy when she's there. I tried with her the other day but she just runs into the nappy pile when my backs turned and slips one on. It's really frustrating. Buying a star chart this week (for other issues that also need addressed before preschool) and a toilet ladder. That best do the trick!!
  17. Very nice. I love a simple format. I started blogging this year but already I'm finding it 'oh so' difficult to find the time to fit it in. Way too much going on in my world! Wish you all the luck with your blogging adventure.
  18. Just saw one for sale in the for sale section of the forum. Posted earlier today I think, didnt open it so don't know size, might be worth taking a look.
  19. I too love watching this. Although I must say, I'm finding it very difficult to watch this series just through experiences ive had with the hospital itself since the last series took place. Its very weird. They were filming when I was there on my last occasion, I'm hoping if I'm in the background of any footage I'm heavily blurred out!!! On a positive note, after taking my daughter there in the last few weeks I can't praise the children's a&e department enough.
  20. I believe its now due to inhalation, a study was also done into cancer specifically ovarian cancer caused by the use of talc (although I believe this study was carried out in adult females) and also there is the issue of it sometimes irritating the skin more than helping. If you search online I'm sure you can come up with the studies to back up the evidence behind the inhalation and cancer risks. I've never used it myself, anyone feel free to correct me anyone but I believe these are all the issues behind the recent changes in advice.
  21. Sorry, excuse the shameless plugging I wouldn't normally but.. http://realitybitesbaking.wordpress.com/2012/01/31/rose-vanilla-triple-layer-cake/ I spent ages perfecting this recipe, and finally got there. Did it for my daughters 3rd birthday. Everyone was very weary of the flavours but was amazed by the taste of it. I'd recommend anyone try it for something a little different but traditional at the same time. Although I bake, often, I would say anyone could bake this. It's as simple as a can be.
  22. Snap! Apparently, apparently, we have the easy life.
  23. I'm in the same boat. I've wanted to do midwifery since pregnancy now. Cannot stomach the thought of education, I'd have to do GCSEs first too as I didn't even finish school. I thought about doula training but was put off by a) the expense of training b) the prospect of not many mums actually using doula services c) being used more as a nanny than mothers help I trained as a breastfeeding counsellor in the end. That will help towards midwifery if I choose to go for it in the future. I actually want to train through midwifery, then become a lactation consultant after that too but it's serious serious work and endless coursework. If I could do from home, would suit me to the ground. There are a few doulas about the forum, try searching doula and I sure the lady in thinking of will come up and may be able to offer more advice. Think her name is Natalie?
  24. My daughters just been offered a place at Dulwich Village Pre School to start in September. She really wants to go now after literally hounding us for 18 months to get her a place at 'school' but trying to explain to her she has to wait. Really trying to get her to interact with others her age, started doing the library group at Dulwich Library on Thursday afternoons which she loves but she just doesn't interact with other kids at all, she prefers to act the jester or be grown up on her own. Much like my last thread I think this one. Is there anyone out there with a daughter or son, we're not fussed in the slightest, that may well be starting Dulwich Village PS in September too? PLEASE PM ME!! I realise everything will probably all be fine when she is there, but I'd really love to feel more comfortable about leaving her, knowing she won't be feeling lonely, intentionally or not. Would love to see her making a start at interacting etc. Feeling emotional. Where's my baby gone?
  25. I don't know who we had during our first a&e visit on Monday night but she was fantastic! It was 3am so I was extremely tired, I don't remember catching her name. My daughter even slipped in a very genuine 'thank you see you tomorrow' on our way out. To which I replied 'I hope not babe' she has since been talking about dreaming about the hospital. Hmmm..
