  1. I hadn’t realised it had been painted over. Seems a damn shame.
  2. It’s very likely to be a mistake by a council contractor, so they should make good; also, someone else could be waiting for a much needed installation. It might be quickest to email your councillor, as they should be able to track down who’s responsible, rather than going from pillar to post with switchboards etc.
  3. How exactly would “the real police” go about solving this crime? Talk me through the process. Are “the real police” uniformed? Or are only plainclothes detectives real enough? What rank of police would be real enough to investigate? Should they be armed? What would satisfy you?
  4. Pure ignorance on your part. She uses her given name. There is no requirement, legal or otherwise, for a woman to change her name on marriage. She is not an adjunct to John Cryer.
  5. Is political football the most pathetic cliche ever? The antipathy and contempt that the last government had for London and Londoners drove it to keep TfL on an annual funding regime, meaning the Mayor would have to come back every six months to beg for the money required to keep the transport network running. This made it impossible to plan for new infrastructure projects or serious upgrades. The national rail network, motorways etc are funded on a 5-year planning cycle. As I understand it, the new government intends to return to a 5-year funding agreement for TfL from April and is negotiating with the Mayor as to what this will entail. This will be part of the public spending review to be completed in the spring. Consequently, all TfL requires from the budget is enough funding to last for the remainder of this financial year, which is well past half way. As the Mayor states in the article, any increase on last year’s funding to get TfL through to April would be a good result. I really don’t think Sadiq Khan has any ambitions beyond remaining as Mayor of London, by the way.
  6. No, I hadn’t noticed. Did you have a particular HA in mind or are particular estates or properties being sold?
  7. I would recommend 306 Surgery on Lordship, I’ve never had any complaints with them: https://306medicalcentre.nhs.uk/
  8. This has to be an improvement. The Parched group pubs seem pretty decent overall, each maintaining its own character. Whereas Young’s has become a ghastly chain , one rung up on ‘spoons but with higher prices and worse toilets.
  9. Tarmac is not a substrate; it is a surface.
  10. I note from the licence application that the Designated Supervisor is a Mr.Grappe…
  11. Or an awning shop. That specialises in really big awnings.
  12. Next time I’m having a drink in Franklin’s and need a fag, I shall stand on the pavement outside Bora and chain smoke. Neither the owner or his sprauncy punters could object, surely? I’d be on the pavement, in the open air, in what is the public realm?
  13. Great, thanks! I was just about to go there on spec.
  14. Is it worth setting out for DKH or are they affected by the MS update problems?
  15. There is a recycling bin for small electrical items outside Denmark Hill station. I presume it would be OK for it to go in there?
  16. I didn’t think so but National Rail planner says 16 minutes, including 5 minutes to change platforms at Peckham. Quite surprising.
  17. The Montpelier in Peckham has always been reliable and has plenty of table space in the afternoon.
  18. Thanks for the warning, I was going to use the P13 to get a big shop from Sainsbury’s tomorrow. I can’t find anything on the TfL website either.
  19. I believe it is a 25 year lease, so that would mean it was taken out in 2000. Wetherspoons were trying to offload the place as far back as 2014 but there has never been any serious interest. It must have been a loss maker since at least then.
  20. It is if a “colourful enfilade of rooms” is included. I thought enfilade was a way of cooking fish.
  21. I think the lease is still held by Wetherspoons and they are responsible for paying rent and rates until late 2025. It’s the remainder of the lease that is for sale. Wetherspoons had been trying to sell the lease for the best part of ten years, so I’m guessing the place was never really profitable. While the owner is being paid six figures by spoons for the next 18 months they have no need to worry, so the place will probably sit empty.
  22. Wetherspoons only rented the place. I think (but don’t know) that it’s owned by AMC, a US firm that claims to be the world’s largest cinema operator. AMC bought out Odeon, which bought out ABC, which had owned it from the 1930s, if not built it. Local historians please correct me. If AMC is the owner, then an independent cinema (do such things exist?) sounds unlikely. But what can be done with a listed cinema? A church? What can be done with a listed church? A cinema? Both are buildings built for a fad that has had its day.
  23. Just been charged a full £6.45 for a pint of Amstel in the Great Exhibition (£5.20 ish in most places in ED or Peckham). There was rugby on a small telly. Is this dynamic pricing in action? The bar person was embarrassed to charge me it.
  24. “Listen to them - the children of the night. What music they make!”
  25. Thanks for posting. This explains all the barking I’ve been hearing. I’ve seen a couple of officers on the hill but not seen the dog.
