  1. dulwich jewellers was indeed rarely open and it closed forever in 1991 when celestial transplanted itself under new ownership and opened on november 30. we have expanded and been there ever since.
  2. I used to take the 63 home to peckham rye from my work as a guardian sub-editor (honestly). one night the driver was loudly rue to a young woman with a nice little dog. several of us told him off and he then drove like a loony all the way home. his face was a picture of incipient disaster. I complained to the bus company and they replied saying no one of his description was working that night. I kicked up hell and tney finally caved in and said the driver had been sent for counselling and "self-awareness asnalysis".
  3. I would never ban anyone, although she (he?) obviously thinks he/she is a bit too cool for east dulwich and I agree
  4. in answer to those who castigated me for saying east dulwich is a village, I refer you to local histories which state quite clearly that east dulwich is the largest of the villages that constitute dulwich. but does it really matter if east dulwich is a village, a small town or a middle class enclave or a haven for m&s groupies or waitrose wannabees or what the hell else? what I know is that it is a great place to live and run a shop... although I might be happier if undisputedtruth took her custom elsewhere.
  5. we have run an independent shop on LL for nearly 11 years. times are really tough right now and we need any sdort of lift. the arrival of M&S will do that. it will help to turn us into a retail destination. I am aware that many of the forumites would rather we stayed small and not very middle class, but these people should open their eyes. east dulwich has been firmly middle class and somewhat affluent for years. in common with many residents of east dulwich, I love how this village has grown over the last decade and look forward to our future. you may now have a hissy fit and stamp your feet
  6. well done captain birdseye. let's keep lordship lane free of shops people might want to visit. if you have your way most will be boarded up. there is a recession on, you know, and us traders need all the lift we can get. m&s is a vote of confidence in our retail future
  7. does peclhamasbestos mean pretty delicious and moxons. sopers is lovelt, but is in nunhead not the lordship lane environs
  8. I am hugely enjoying all the forum bedwetters frothing and fuming at the awful prospect of a top store opening in lordship lane. wake up people. the lane needs a boost. I speak as one who runs a shop further down the road. busdiness is tough right now and marks and sparks would give us all a lift. we would become a destination. some people on here seems to hate the idea of shoppers coming here to spend their money. I don't and neither would any other retailer on the lane. maybe demon barber could bring himself to get off the fence for once and do something to help local trade
  9. surely patients not coming in is good, means they are well which is supposed to be the idea
  10. so relived that ************* has found her *******. phew!
  11. a man singing in public!!!!! god, where will it all end? let's put the dull into dulwich. too much of this gratuitous smiling going on.
  12. sun is out, hamlet are top of the league, our shop is picking up a bit. things are jolly good.
  13. actually, there was not an issue with the area. apparently they got a grant to put in drainage altho the field never flooded and surface water always ran off down the slope.
  14. does anyone know where I can find vintage photographs of the graveyard in its pomp. they don't have any on site and google did not reveal anything. there must be some images somewhere
  15. jeez, barber really is mr fun isn't he? oh, and fyi aquarius moon, there is nothing traditional about peace and love!
  16. it does look awful. I was walking our doggies on the day they did it. the usual team of park gardeners had just makred out the football pitch when the other guys turned up and dismantled the goalposts and started spraying. they told me the spraying would not affect the grass surface. as you can see in the pic the whole thing is a mess. perhaps a certain vocal councillor could tell us what is going on and why. a big ask, I know
  17. I note the council are about to "improve" forest hill road by moving a ped crossing a couple of feet and putting tubs and greenery down the middle of the road. absolutely vital work I am sure. I am also sure demon barber will have a string of reasons why such expenditure is important at a time of hideous spending cuts. wot no cycle parking bay, james?
  18. a quibble, possibly, but why are you getting this book from amazon when local bookshops - who really do need your support - are stocking it?
  19. 4am is the daily norm. as an insomniac I hear it and realise that the nightly torment is nearly over.
  20. for god's sake. phone box, tree? this bloody crossing is already superfluous. FOUR crossings between iceland and goose green. lunacy!
  21. has anyone noticed that the new puffin (?) crossing which has devoured a huge chunk of lordship lane in order connect us all with the co-op actually bangs right into the phone box on the co-op side. well done!
  22. obviously has to be james barber. *runs screaming from the room*
  23. have just returned from walking the doggies in peckham rye park. damage by staff type dogs to the trees has reached horrendous proportions and we are now certain to lose many nice examples. bark has been stripped from the base of many trees and it may now be impossible to save them. park authorities really must start a programme of protective guards around the trees. I know cash is tight, but do we really have to write off our beloved trees? come on councillors. time to get cracking.
  24. 10-15cms of snow forecast for tonight. I trust I can rest assured that southwark will be out all night gritting everywhere. last year it was very difficult for those of us knocking in years to even get down the road on icy pavements. this won't happen again. will it?
  25. ed_pete, you have to accept that there is no such thing as being unfair to james barber. it just isn't possible.
