Just cancel the League Cup final. You could say it is due to Abramovich to make a statement, but it is a pointless competition. You could put on a show at Wembley instead, something relevant to supporting an independent Ukraine

Not really sure of your point. Roads get congested for a variety of reasons. If we wanted them clear for emergency vehicles then nobody else should drive. But that is impracticable. On Friday a vehicle was delivering booze to the Cherry Tree, congestion was half a mile in each direction. Perhaps their should be a campaign to close the pub.

Sorry referring to oligarchs. Not sure how many other Russians live in London and why. If they are here for altruistic reasons the would leave them out of sanctions.
-
I understand they have a lot of influence. Better still seize their property and use it for social housing. I'd go and far as supporting our PM on this.

Well that is hardly constructive. I'm new to this Forum but I did look back on previous threads and there is a lot of nastiness. Sadly by some active here. Please do try to keep it civil. Sorry if that is patronising but unsure how I can be more subtle

But even the term idiotic is emotive. I know that this was not aimed at an individual. You could say that many drivers are idiots as they know about air pollution and climate change but do not change their behaviour. That is the challenge, making it more inconvenient should make a difference but it may take time. It's not simply switching to active travel or public transport. If you have to drive your child to school then go with a car full, and take other cars off the road.

Serious question would anyone here fight to save Ukraine? No, I didn't think so. Not sure what the West could do. I'd happily deport all Russian citizens. Not sure how many UK citizens live in Russia.

I thought that the postings about LTNers comments on a Councillor were being ironic bearing in mind the vitriol by some of the anti-LTNers against the architect of these schemes. Even the use of terms pro and anti hardly encourage compromise. Has it always been like this? I've not gone through the old thread but see that there was 1000s of posts.

A reminder to get your bike registered - are the police still doing this monthly on Saturday on LL?

Odd that you object to reducing your water bill. But you will be pleased to hear that water is, generally, not traded internationally unless you count Wales supplying Birmingham with their water If you want a reason to object you could look at pensioners who no longer go to a place of work where they can use company water. If they are smart workers could shower, toilet and drink at work. Some may even pilfer water and take it home. I expect few pensioners have large families at home not earning. Therefore shouldn't use anywhere near what a family with school kids will use.

Melbourne Grove Market Trial Online Survey
Waseley replied to andrewc's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Then fill in question 8 on any other comments and say you don't want the market. The form seems acceptable to me. If there is no demand businesses will not flock to join. I don't see this as a conspiracy. -
I understand that Thames Water has rented some local properties for their engineers seeing that they are here permanently. I don't like whining but the number of major leaks gets me down. How long can you blame crumbling infrastructure. Happy with my water meter, this identified a leaking mains pipe into the property, which with a combination of Thames Water, their mole, and a private engineer means the end of lead into the house.

Melbourne Grove Market Trial Online Survey
Waseley replied to andrewc's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Stopped myself posting yesterday following the predictable negativity. Glad to see more positive comments. I'm ambivalent and indifferent to NCR. But the document says that some residents and businesses were keen on another street market so why not do a wider consultation -
So do you means test the owner or the driver? If the latter then you need facial recognition. It's not going to happen. This is a forum. We are having a discussion. If I've got to wrong then please tell me why. If means testing road charging is in anyone's manifesto then I'd love to see their case and how this will be delivered.
-
No, Rockets case for means based road charging was like my discussion with a neighbour. Every time I challenged them on their views on the vaccine they came up with phony science. I wasn't making a blanket accusation, and probably don't have time to find a similar proposal from you unless you wish to direct me accordingly. Don't take that as a challenge 😉
-
Rockets, some of your arguments are like anti-vaxxers. This is what I believe and now I will find the evidence. How you equate traffic offences with a road charging system I don't know. The UK courts can already issue fines based on salaries. A routine road charging system, would need to have facial recognition if it was to charge drivers, rather than owners. Even with our surveillance society that would be a step too far. Otherwise I'd get an elderly retired relative to register my car, so I'd pay less for road charging.

National politics is an important factor. We've had a Tory government full of gesture politics, yet have been taken to task by the Supreme Court for failing to achieve air quality. They give local authorities blunt instruments to tackle this, meanwhile failing to increase fuel duty and perversely reducing air passenger duty for short haul.

I want it and I want it now culture. Microdeliveries, I've run out of toilet paper so I will get some delivered in 20 mins . Even if this is by bicycle it is still not efficient. I run out of stuff but that is what the convenience store is for. Good point on Amazon, I do avoid but occasionally for a Niche product and it makes Xmas pressies so convenient.
-
In deed, I'm a fan and great to see the thread on cargo bikes. Part of the solution....
-
I've just done a quick Google search in home deliveries. There is a little about freight consolidation, and last mile zero emission deliveries, in gov clean air zone framework. But I didn't find anything about reducing home deliveries. It's a free market and retailers will charge accordingly. The authorities don't like intervening. There either lacks the political will, market will and/or public will to take up more creative solutions.
-
I asked for alternative solutions Rockets. Means tested road pricing won't work. Unless you get facial recognition on ANPR cameras you won't be able to differentiate between a wealthy driver and a poorer driver. The charge is on the vehicle and therefore very open to abuse. And now the genie is out of the bottle how on earth do you curtail home deliveries? There is an argument that for household essentials are more efficiently distributed through home deliveries. I'd happily to tell the masses to curtail consumption, but few politicians will be prepared to do this and Caroline Lucas can't achieve this on her own.
-
I struggle with those opposing LTNs is that I have yet to see them any viable alternatives for getting people out of cars. You can appear dismissive of public transport and show a lot of antipathy towards e scooters and cyclists. Interestingly now two relevant threads have been lounged you no longer post on these two subjects There is a wider conversation on why it is so difficult to get people out of their cars. At what stage does the disruption lead to behaviour change. A no brainer for those who rightly or wrongly driveve their kids to school is to lift share. Sent from upstairs on a 185. Oh dear it has just stopped at Denmark Hill to even out the service. Engine running. Two separate threads there.

New electric double-deck buses will be running on route 63
Waseley replied to jazzer's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
There was a great documentary about the routemaster a few years ago on the BEEB. They were out of date by the time they were introduced as the model was a single driver taking the fares. They had to stretch the original body. They were from another era where transport operators built and maintained their fleet. That said they were reliable and outlived their competition. They were not accessible. Looking forward to going on a new one. The lights and route Indic Tor are lovely and bright so I have seen them. -

The Forest Hill society were keen on extending the 63 to HOP. This was a quid pro quo when the service was split and no longer ran the whole distance from Kings Cross to crystal Palace. This was a good ten years ago. No harm in writing to TfL, your civic society/residents group or MP.
