Spartacus, I understand that the Mayor is responsible for pollution in Europe and has installed large fans to blow it over here. And Saharan dust too. Get real, most particulate pollution is not from road traffic
-
Car lobby comes up trumps again. So much for net zero. Better ways of helping those out in need. Perhaps we could have a similar cut for the cost of public transport.

What is disappointing is that the UK's position both pre and post 2016 is to encourage/ support Ukraine joining the EU. Why Johnson had to include Brexit in his speech heaven knows. Surely not all of middle England buys the xenophobic tone.

There are loads of decent walks in Kent and Surrey where you can get a train out. It spoils things using the car, a healthy walk good for the environment. Oh sadly I'll add to pollution and CO2 by driving. Shoreham Otford good. Epsom Downs. Tonbridge. Box Hill. Etc etc

Many European countries have had these in place for a number of years. We are behind the curve in the UK, Labour proposing a national standard but the coalition pushing back on this. It took the Supreme Court in 2016 to change the landscape. Although in 2015 the then Mayor announced the introduction of the ULEZ after his school mate Cameron wouldn't give him the extra dosh to tackle London's poor air quality. It's nice to post facts rather than opinion. Edited, good to have opinion but at times nice for things to be black and white, particularly with all the anger about restrictions in cars and the general sense of entitlement

Edited - wrong thread

Is a dinner switch like those bells you had in stately homes which you rang to summon servants? If so how posh 🙂
-
This thread is about the ULEZ. Why use it to have a go at cyclists. Why are you so angry about cyclists? Don't answer that one here. I am not bothered about the outer boroughs and won't be shedding a tear if they get the ULEZ. If they were less carcentric, introduced 20mph, improved cycle infrastructure I may feel differently

Cat run over on Crystal Palace Road

Perhaps the strangest reason to oppose LTNs - that they encourage large vehicles to speed endangering cats and others Funny how the LTN thread spreads it's tentacles... Which will come off worse against a two tonne plus X5 which my question was about. Not Peugeot 3008s and the like -

Penguin, would you say that large SUVs such as Land Rovers, BMs, mercs, Volvos and the like make good sense for most of their London owners? As for safety it is the nut behind the steering wheel that is the biggest issue. Not sure if SUV drivers in London are any safer but it can be frightening once you get on country roads. The protection that they afford the driver, weight and amount of steel may contribute to a feeling of invisibility. Ultimately it is momentum that us the main protection, the lighter vehicle will generally come off worst. DKH - you are more aware of the law than me. Perhaps you are better at Googling, or maybe have more first hand experience. Prey tell more! Just teasing, although is it a custodial sentence, deportation or public execution. The old ways were best🙂 -
SUV Tyres Deflated on Burbage Road

It's interference with a vehicle not damage. Piston Heads has a whole thread on the subject. But more importantly is Mr/Mrs Rockets making their sweeping statements against me, you or one they don't agree with -
Dirty Sadiq "Go ahead, make my day". Crocodile Khan "that's not a knife ..... This is a knife"

SUV Tyres Deflated on Burbage Road

Not really sure how you saw my posts as supporting this action. Simply pointing out that compared to smashing looms it was very low level. And those of you up in arms how many supported the 2000 fuel protests? Mr/Mrs Rockets are Southwark pulling the strings 🙂 -
SUV Tyres Deflated on Burbage Road

All a bit knee jerk and over-reaction. I'm sorry you've had your tyres let down. In terms of criminal damage, it isn't, but an inconvenience. Direct action has a long history, the Ludittes didn't simply wee on the looms. Sorry couldn't think of an analogy to letting tyres down. Think back to 2000 when many, not me, supported blockading of fuel terminals -
SUV Tyres Deflated on Burbage Road

There is a local street that used to be full of large SUVs. I used to think that drug dealers or minor footballers lived there. In the last year or so they have switched to Tesslas. Another indulgence for most. The majority of London drivers will do low mileage, short urban journeys, not requiring a large diesel, or even a large electric vehicle. For many there is sense to switching to a car club. I see a new company Hiya, in the area as well as Zip car. It's a difficult transition moving from the convenience of having a vehicle outside to car club. More leadership from Westminster is needed -

Well it may be wrong to target individuals but hell it's got publicity -
Looking at another thread on the Forum you could also ask were they pleased that they financed Trump and Brexit, and whether they will be following the winter Paralympics. Oh and are they proud about the humanitarian mess in Syria that they contributed to. OK poor taste ...

I'm a competent plasterer. For small patches I use the rapid tubes of polyfiller. The solvent based stuff goes on smoothly and sets fairly hard. The water based dry stuff is dreadful, but actually mixes well with proper gypsum plaster giving the best of both worlds for small jobs. For larger repairs gyproc easifill is a great new product, sands well although a bit soft I still need to use the proper stuff from time to time. A 25kg bag is too large and will end up going off. Anywhere round here split bags for sale to DIYers?

Prime Minister. Just say "yes" to Ukrainian refugees. And Syrian. And Afghan etc etc. Don't use long sentences. Three letters are perfect. Think of Zammo, say yes just say yes

Makes me feel so old when all the cast in a sitcom have gone. Are you Being Served and now On the Buses. Ian Lavender will hopefully live to a 100.

Thanks for the history lesson but still not sure why you need to laud it over Germany. You've also ignored the UK making it easy for criminals and despots. Not that I am saying one country or another is better or worse. Just think it does not help the discussion having a go at an ally. As for dependence on Russian oil you can argue that the West should have long since weaned itself off fossil fuel. Germany like the UK foolishly turned their backs on nuclear in the 90s. What would the UK be doing if we hadn't had the cushion of North Sea reserves. I was tempted to talk about the geopolitical mess we'd made in Palestine and India (partition) but best leave it there If you are harking back to 1939 then the failure to go in early with the French was one of the biggest mistakes. Should we be sending in troops now? Anyway he is a dangerous nutter, with some complexes. History will tell whether the East could or should have managed him better

So London is a congested city. But if you go to most cities and towns you will find congestion at peak times. That can include the motorway network eg Manchester, M5/M6 junction, M4 south Wales. Some of this will be people driving to work or kids to school. The radial roads into Birmingham are solid two times a day. There is a bigger picture on how we address this. We could have gone LA after the war and had a network of three ways. But even then you get gridlock and the famous smogs of the 1970s. If everytime there is congestion someone started a thread then this site would be totally dominated by this subject. There is already a thread about LTNs do we need any more? Nothing wrong about posting warnings when there is disruption going on for a period of time as a public service. For example water mains. I've just destroyed my own argument as we are in a permanent state of disruption due to this.🙂

You are probably not aware that Germany was devastated in the 1940s following a war started by their fascist dictator. They also carried out genocide against people they didn't like including 10s of millions of Russians. Not surprisingly Germany's post war foreign policy has been very much about peace and demilitarisation. Suggest you cut out the nationalist nonsense and look instead about what the UK is doing both to welcome refugees and appropriate Russian assets.
