  1. Over the Easter weekend we are planning two rides, one on Saturday 30th and one on April 1st (Easter Monday). Easter Monday ride will look at some of the seventy-six projects shortlisted for the RIBA London Awards 2024. Werner is sorting out a route and details will be posted later. Here we are just posting my ride on the 30th March. This will be a Central London circuit using lots of Cycleway. Easter Saturday (March 30th) Ride. London Bridge-Kensington Gardens Loop < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/london-bridge-to-kensington-gardens-circular-cycle-ride-tickets-868586835607 > There has been a decade or more of work to develop safe, segregated cycle routes in London. What kind of possibilities has it opened up? Last year I set out to look at Central London where most of the new cycleways are. Stitched together a circular route that gets you around in reasonable comfort and passes lots of interesting locations. Report of last year’s ride is here. Start 10am at London Bridge. Cross bridge and drop down to Cycleway 3, a well-designed, segregated route. Follow this along the embankment, through Parliament Squ, past Buck house, across Hyde Park and into Kensington Gdns. Start return past the Albert Memorial and continue to Lancaster Gate. Abandon C3 here and stay in Hyde Park heading east. Exit Hyde Park just before Marble Arch via the cycle crossing to Stanhope Pl, then back streets (LCN5) to Crawford St where the route becomes Cycleway 27. C27 is a bit of a let-down; no segregation, no protection at junctions. However it is a (nearly) straight route. At Gower St we leave C27 and use the segregated lanes on Torrington Place eastwards, these not having a cycleway designation (LCN6). Keeping going east we join a second stretch of well designed route, Cycleway 6 and turn south to and over Blackfriars Bridge. Last segment is on C14 most of the way to London Bridge. At an easy pace we can ride this loop in 3 hours including a coffee break. Bruce Leading, 14 miles.   2. On the 23rd we have 2 rides planned. Bruce has a new short ride showcasing the no longer missing link of Cycleway 4, Jamie leads his annual pre-boatrace all day outing. Ride 1. Annual Southwark Cyclists Pre-Boat Race ride < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/annual-southwark-cyclists-pre-boat-race-ride-tickets-863062462057 > Coordinating Instructions and Timings Riders will meet at 10.00am on Saturday 23rd March at the bottom of the steps outside and under the Waterloo Station Victory Arch that is 50 yards up on the right from where York Road meets Mepham Street and Cab Road just before the road bridge. A short safety briefing will be given at 10.00am. The ride should arrive back at Waterloo Station before 4pm. Mission To cycle the iconic 4.25 mile course of the 169th Oxford & Cambridge Boat Race up the Middlesex bank of the Thames from the Race start point at Putney embankment to the finish at Chiswick Bridge by Mortlake. The race first started in 1845 and is always held on a flood tide with the crews rowing with the current. This years televised Boat race itself takes place on the following Saturday,30th March with the Women’s Race starting at 2.46pm followed by the Men’s Race starting at 3.46pm. Route This is a circular route that involves some great river views and enjoyable cycling in stages for about 20 miles in all. The route out is mostly along quieter roads and some river paths and is thus suitable for competent rider abilities. The return route is predominantly on cycle lanes, via Hammersmith, Kensington Gardens, Buckingham Palace and back to Waterloo. Our 30 minute coffee stop will be at the stunning Bishops Palace on the northern river bank. We will stop for lunch near the finish at Chiswick Bridge. Checks and Equipment Riders are urged to pre-check their bikes e.g. A = Air in tyres, B = Brakes, C= Chain & gears etc. Riders are further advised to bring: a warm fleece, waterproof top/trousers & bike lock. Ride 2. Outward use Cycleway 4 now completely segregated from traffic all the way from Tower Bridge to Deptford Creek. Light segregation on first short section from London Bridge and final section off road to Cutty Sark. Return using Cycleway 10, joining at Creekside and leaving at Tower Bridge Road to get back to London Bridge via Bermondsey St. Each leg will take about 1 hour. Will allow 2½ hours so that we can have a break at Greenwich. This ride is on segregated cycleway, off road path or easy streets throughout and so is suitable for any level of cyclist and with plenty to see is family friendly. Bruce leading.   4. Try somewhere like Newport. On the main railway line to Wales. Near Bristol (20) mins) which is a cultural hub. Two-bed house £100.000 Or consider moving closer to your children. You will only get older and, if you like them, loved ones can be a source of comfort.

Bruce leading a new adventurous loop through Nunhead Cemetery, up Hilly Fields, then Brockley and Ladywell Cemetery and Camberwelll New Cemetery, up One Tree Hill, through Camberwell Old Cemetery and finally up Dawsons Heights. Only 8 miles, but several uphills where we may need to walk. Allowing 2½ hours, so plenty of time to walk steep bits and still have a short coffee break. Main adventurous bit is One Tree Hill. This is not a huge hill, but very steep. Paths are nice, but all have steps. If paths are slippery may need to park bikes and walk last sections. Worth it to see the “Oak of Honour” and the WWII gun emplacement. Everyone welcome. Come along and enjoy the challenge! To Kings Cross. Granary Square for a coffee break (in market, under cover) and a bit of a look round. Outward route Cycleways 10 & 6. Over Blackfriars Bridge. Farringdon then quiet streets and safe crossings to Kings Cross. Return leg will take a more easterly route with a bit of canal path. Southwark Bridge back to Peckham.   6. On the 9th we have 2 rides planned. Eva has a new ride from Dulwich to the City, Simon K, has a favourite Thames-side ride to the Flood Barrier. Ride 1. Will take 2.5 - 3 hours, mainly because we will spend at least 20 minutes with the 2 models exhibited at the Guildhall. Mostly on quiet streets and Cycleways.   7. Important news: The opening of Cycleway 4 through Surrey Quays. This missing section of C4 is due to open shortly. Southwark Cyclists, together with Greenwich and Lewisham Cyclists, are planning a ride to celebrate this long-awaited development on March 10th. We hope councillors and possibly the London Cycling Commissioner will attend, Assemble at the Cutty Sark from 11.00am, Depart at 12.00, Arrival at Southwark Park from 12.30. We are planning a feeder ride from Peckham Rye Park Café leaving at 10am. Anyone who can help with marshalling let me or Simon S know (can email me at [email protected]).
  8. Thanks all for the encouragement and suggestions about finding the jigsaws good homes. Only the rain is impeding their distribution now. Any suggestions about chilldren's videos from the 90s? Educational generally, a bit trendy (Magic Roundabout) and Trumpton (I had a collecting binge)
  9. There are again two contrasting rides on March 2nd, a 4-4½ hour one from London Bridge to Alexandra Palace with a 9.30 start and a 2-2½ hour, 10 o’clock ride hunting dragons in the City. Ride 1. We missed the anniversary but now intend to make up for that with a ride celebrating its 151st year. Start 9.30am, Southwark Gateway Needle, south side of London Bridge. Outward via Clissold Park, Woodberry Wetlands and Finsbury Park. Return via lovely off road Parkland Walk from Highgate to Finsbury Park, Emirates Stadium and Clerkenwell.   13. I've got about 25 jigsaws 250 to 500 pieces of wildlife and nature. They were bought for a learning disabled adult so I had education in mind. Most are thick cardboard but about half a dozen are wood. They are all complete. Anyone think of a local charity shop which would like them?
