Join us and repair specialist Jessica Smulder Cohen @jessweaves to explore the art of sashiko stitching and the Japanese philosophy it imbues of a repaired object being more beautiful than its pristine original. A simple running stitch will be taught on a woven fabric swatch so that everyone can have a go on a practice hole before tackling a mend on one of their own items of clothing.
As well as freelance repair jobs Jessica works for clothing brand Toast as a mending specialist.
Things to note:
- This is a beginners class. No previous sewing experience necessary
- The sampler exercise will be taught as a group, whereas the clothing consultations will be one-on-one (I'll go round the table to spend some time with everyone individually)
- Depending on how far we get I will then demonstrate more complicated stitches and will bring along some books so people can get visible mending inspiration.
- Jessica will provide all tools and materials for the sampler but that garments in need of repair should be brought along by participants. If they would like to do a discreet mend they will also need to bring the right colour and weight backing cloth (to patch) and yarn as we may not have an exact match.
- This class is for woven fabrics and we will not be mending knitwear.
Refunds will only be accepted up until the 6th November.
